Hoisin sauce is one of the saltiest Asian flavors, with 1 tablespoon containing roughly 258 mg of sodium. This CKD-friendly recipe contains significantly less sodium and preservatives than store-bought. This is the perfect companion for pho and can also be enjoyed as a dipping sauce or glaze on a protein of your choice.

You'll need...

  • 2 tbsp Coconut Secret Coconut Aminos

  • 2 tbsp natural peanut butter (we like Laura Scudder's)

  • 1 tbsp honey

  • 2 tsp rice wine vinegar

  • 2 tsp sesame oil

  • 1 clove garlic, grated

  • 1/8 tsp black pepper

  • 1/2 tsp gochugaru

  • 1/4 tsp five-spice powder

  • a bowl + mixing utensil

  • airtight container, for storage

Directions

  1. Mix all ingredients in a bowl. That's it.

  2. Serve with your favorite Asian meals. We like this with pho or as part of a glaze for whatever protein you prefer.

Chef Chie's Notes

A little goes a long way. Refrigerate after use & store in an airtight container. Good for roughly 1 month, but trust your taste buds if something's off.

Chie recommends repurposing a thoroughly washed BPA-free vessel for your homemade kalamansi butter, whether that be a mason jar, Bonne Maman jar, or a glass Pyrex container.
