A quick and easy low-sodium twist on America's favorite barbecue sauce.

You'll need...

  • 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar

  • 3 tbsp no salt added ketchup (we like Heinz)

  • 1 tbsp brown sugar or honey

  • 2 tsp garlic powder

  • 2 tsp onion powder

  • 1 tsp black pepper

  • 1 pinch cumin

  • small/medium saucepan

  • something to mix with - spatula, spoon, etc.

Directions

  1. Stir all ingredients together in a saucepan over low heat. Bring to a simmer, stirring every few minutes or so.

  2. Once simmering, continue to stir occasionally, turning off the heat after 5 minutes.

  3. Serve with wings, pizza, or your favorite cut of BBQ.

Chef Chie's Notes

This recipe is inspired by Sweet Baby Ray's and named after Chie's sweet baby, Ray.

Make sure to use the lowest heat setting on your stove. The times above work for our gas stove at home, but may differ depending on the type of stove you have. Keep an eye on it! Use a non-metal mixing utensil to protect your cookware from any scratching.

Store in an airtight container and refrigerate after use. Chie recommends repurposing a thoroughly washed BPA-free vessel for your homemade barbecue sauce, whether that be a mason jar, Bonne Maman jar, or a glass Pyrex container.

a tweet from dril: "if theres a spicy brown mustard, why not a spicy brown ketchup?" the wise man smiled. "my friend, the condiment you seek is Barbecue Sauce"
